FS1 WEST

The season started for the 14 competitors at Angels Stadium in Anaheim, a traditional opening date for Monster Jam. Neil Elliott in Max-DTM grabbed the early point lead on the strength of a dominant Freestyle performance in the stadium that earned him 2016 Stadium Freestyle of the Year. Racing winner Adam Anderson in Grave Digger® started his defense of the FS1 Championship Series title on the right foot. Local favorite Time Flys (Kelvin Ramer) took home the Wheelie win. Next stop: Petco Park in San Diego.

STADIUM TOUR 3

Tampa became the opening date for this tour, thanks to an NFL playoff game. Grave Digger (Dennis Anderson) narrowly recorded fast qualifier, but bowed out after a round one victory when the truck rolled after the finish. Meanwhile, Son-uva Digger® (Ryan Anderson) was marching through the bracket, eventually defeating Iron Outlaw (Mike Christensen) for his third career Tampa Racing champion. Freestyle saw the drivers giving it everything they had as Monster Energy® (Coty Saucier) sought to avenge a racing loss. A strong and furious run, culminated with a backflip, enticed a winning score for Coty’s biggest win in front of his home crowd. Mike Thompson came out first in Wheelie competition and could not be beaten to give Wrecking Crew some needed championship points. Next stop: Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

TRIPLE THREAT SERIES WEST PRESENTED BY AMSOIL

Five shows rocked the Tacoma Dome in front of an appreciative crowd at this long-time stop. The series points were tied going into the final show, but a dominating performance in the Sunday finale allowed Grave Digger (Cole Venard) to move out to a 10-point lead. Great Clips Mohawk WarriorTM (Bryce Kenny) and Monster Mutt® Dalmatian (Cynthia Gauthier) are holding their own in many competitions to keep the battles interesting. Next stop: Sacramento, CA

TRIPLE THREAT SERIES CENTRAL PRESENTED BY AMSOIL

Greensboro may be inland, but the Monster Jam fans experienced a shark attack with the arrival of MegalodonTM. While Megalodon (Justin Sipes) has the current points lead, the competition is showing parity as several other athletes got in wins throughout the weekend. A big performance by El Toro Loco® (Armando Castro) vaulted the first year athlete into a force to be reckoned with as the season rolls along. Next stop: Louisville, KY

TRIPLE THREAT SERIES EAST

The DCU Center in Worcester has seen plenty of shows in its history. Max-D and Colton Eichelberger are making a strong case for the automatic bid to Monster Jam World Finals® XVIII, averaging 46 points per show to move into a commanding lead. The Sunday finale featured Max-D winning three competitions and finishing second in two others, totaling 50 points. Next stop: Albany, NY

Arena Tour 4

The cold weather does not diminish the enthusiasm of Monster Jam fans when the gates open at the Fargodome. The arrival of the 2017 shows were greeted with enthusiasm and the trucks and drivers responded accordingly. Northern Nightmare® (Cam McQueen) protected the week 1 point lead, despite Grave Digger (Randy Brown) claiming three of the Monster Jam competitions on Sunday. Next stop: Sioux Falls, SD

Arena Tour 5

A pair of Saturday performances at the Thompson-Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville showed why Monster Jam is a top Tennessee attraction. Grave Digger (Pablo Huffaker) and Rammunition (Mat Dishman) shared event championships with Rammunition having one of the best overall weekends. This tour has the potential of developing one of the closest point races for Monster Jam in 2017. Next stop: Milwaukee, WI

Arena Tour 6

Megalodon (Alex Blackwell) picked up back-to-back event championships in North Charleston, South Carolina. It was close as Carolina Crusher was lurking just a single point back for most of the weekend. Stinger (Zane Rettew) picked up a first Freestyle win for the 2017 season. Next stop: Hampton, VA

Week 3 of the 2017 Monster Jam® season saw some dominant performances. To kick off the FS1 East Series, Linsey Weenk in Lucas Oil CrusaderTM recorded the first stadium “Double Down” by winning Racing and Freestyle in San Antonio. His strong Sunday performance has made him the one to catch for the series title, which carries an automatic bid to Monster World Finals® XVIII. (Next Stop: New Orleans, LA)

The FS1 West Series hit a rainy San Diego. FS1 CleatusTM and new driver Colt Stephens notched a Racing win with Freestyle honors going to Todd LeDuc now driving Monster Energy®. (Next stop: Anaheim, CA)

The closest point battle can be found on Stadium Tour 3 where Coty Saucier (Monster Energy) holds a one-point advantage over Ryan Anderson (Son-uva Digger®). A spirited Freestyle in Orlando tightened up the points throughout the field. (Next stop: Toronto, ON)

A home state crowd played a big role in inspiring MegalodonTM and  Justin Sipes when the Triple Threat SeriesTM Central presented by AMSOIL came to Louisville, KY. The Friday performance saw Megalodon gather 50 points out of a possible 56. Megalodon leads the series, but the best battle is between ZombieTM (Ami Houde) and El Toro Loco® (Armando Castro) as they keep swapping the third position. (Next stop: Washington, D.C.)

Out in California, Triple Threat Series West presented by AMSOIL led the charge to be the first Monster Jam event at the Golden 1 Event Center in Sacramento. Grave Digger® driver Cole Venard stretched his 10 point lead, thanks to event titles through the weekend. (Next stop: Spokane, WA)

The Triple Threat Series East made a weekend stop in Albany and the series point leader Colton Eichelberger (Max-DTM) took another big leap in his quest to return to Monster Jam World Finals XVIII.  His 52-point Sunday performance is among the highest efforts of the season by a single athlete. (Next stop: Newark, NJ)

Cam McQueen (Northern Nightmare®) made his first visit top Sioux Falls and brought home two Racing wins to hang onto to the lead in Arena Tour after three weeks of action. Grave Digger (Randy Brown) narrowed the gap slightly, setting up an interesting close to January. (Next stop: Winnipeg, MB)

Mat Dishman in Rammunition has moved solidly into second in the early point standings, holding his own with series leader Grave Digger (Pablo Huffaker). Brandon Derrow in Bad News Travels Fast has become one to watch with regular wins on the weekends. (Next stop: Greenville, SC)

Monster Jam’s visit to Hampton, Virginia included a heartwarming moment as a deployed member of the military surprised his family who was in attendance at the show. This traditional Monster Jam stop has long been supported by military personnel stationed nearby, giving the competitors extra incentive. The series saw a lead change as Carolina Crusher® and Gary Porter took over the top spot over the weekend, now leading by 6 points. (Next stop: Raleigh, NC)

The Art of Grave Digger

All Monster Jam® trucks have their own unique character. Perhaps it’s a stylized fiberglass body that gets your attention. Maybe it’s the splashes of color that draw your eye. Maybe you just like the name.

Grave Digger® meets all of the above and more. It has the additional distinction of being hand-painted.

The Monster Jam trucks seen by millions around the world are rolling works of art. For most of the truck’s 35 years of existence, the job of painting them has been handled by one man. Jim McShea of New Jersey has been trusted with the task for a long time.

“I had a shop in New Jersey and was doing some work for Mike Wales, who was involved with the Liquidator truck. One day, he asked me if I had ever thought about painting Monster Trucks and I said, ‘I’m in’.”

Contacts were made and McShea headed to the Grave Digger shop in North Carolina. His first truck job was the WCW Nitro Van and then he was asked to consider putting his touches on Grave Digger.

At first, it took 40 hours of work to do one Grave Digger body. “Now, I have the job down to the low 30s in hours because it is repetitious and I can estimate the time based on the progress.”

The bodies have become sectioned, divided into the doors, roof, sides, hood and cowl. The body is constructed and fitment is checked before McShea goes to work, giving him a complete canvas.

The work requires a steady hand and attention to detail. “Having the skills to do it all with airbrushing and striping has served me well,” he said. “I’m old school. A lot of my business is hot rods, some commercial lettering, but the hot rod crowd demands just the right look, just like Grave Digger.”

McShea takes great pride in his work. “I get really serious about it,” he adds. “I want it to shine so that the guys doing the clear work have it easy.”

Because of the nature of the competition, having spare body parts is necessary and McShea paints them, too.

He attends a few Monster Jams and Monster Jam World Finals® when his time away from the shop allows. People love to talk about his work.

“I want the truck to be art,” he said. “I’m happy doing this job. You have to live your life doing what you want. I love my job. I’m going to do this until they won’t let me do it anymore.”

For the first time in the 2017 season, all 10 Monster Jam® tours were in action on the road to Monster Jam World Finals® XVIII.

The FS1 West Series returned to Angel Stadium in Anaheim. Eric Swanson (Obsessed) performed his first backflip, which allowed him to narrowly defeat Scott Buetow in Team Hot WheelsTM Firestorm for the Freestyle championship. The victory was California native Swanson’s second career stadium freestyle win after winning last year in San Diego. Point leader Neil Elliott in Max-DTM avenged a racing loss from two weeks earlier by defeating El Toro Loco®. Next Stop: Glendale, AZ

The FS1 East Series headed south to New Orleans. Linsey Weenk racked up his second Racing win of 2017 in Lucas Oil CrusaderTM, but Morgan Kane in Grave Digger® would parlay a strong freestyle into an event championship and narrow the gap at the top of the point standings. Next Stop: Arlington, TX

After a pair of Florida stops, Stadium Tour 3 headed north to Toronto. Son-uva Digger® (Ryan Anderson) and Monster Energy® (Coty Saucier) exchanged Racing wins in the doubleheader. Grave Digger (Carl Van Horn) and El Toro Loco (Becky McDonough) scored perfect 40s to record Freestyle wins. Next Stop: St. Louis, MO

The kickoff to Stadium Tour 4 happened before an appreciative crowd in Detroit. VP Racing Fuels Mad ScientistTM made new fans with a solid Racing win. Grave Digger (Charlie Pauken) won the Freestyle competition. There is a tie at the top in the series point standings. Next Stop: Tampa, FL

Triple Threat Series Central presented by AMSOIL roared into Washington, D.C. with point leader MegalodonTM (Justin Sipes) and Pirate’s CurseTM (Camden Murphy) claiming event championships. ZombieTM (Ami Houde) slipped into second place in the point standings. Next Stop: Kansas City, MO

Triple Threat Series West presented by AMSOIL made a visit to Spokane. Cole Venard (Grave Digger) took a few event championships to pad the point leader, but the weekend closed with a dominant performance by Monster Mutt® Dalmatian (Cynthia Gauthier). Next Stop: Nampa, ID

Triple Threat Series East provided three exciting shows for the fans in Newark, NJ. Colton Eichelberger (Max-D) used consistency to claim his seventh and eighth event championships of the year. Tyler Menninga (Grave Digger) kept it close by picking up a show title as well. Next Stop: Charleston, WV

It was the first of three Canada stops for Arena Tour 4 as the MTS Centre in Winnipeg provided the backdrop. The Pride of Canada, Northern Nightmare® (Cam McQueen), brought home two event championships with Grave Digger (Randy Brown) claiming one. This point race has the two separated by 15 points. Next Stop: Edmonton, AB

Arena Tour 5 made its first stop in South Carolina at Greenville. Three shows meant three different event winners with Grave Digger (Pablo Huffaker), Monster Mutt® (Kevin Crocker) and Rammunition (Mat Dishman) sharing the wealth. Next Stop: Florence, SC

A trio of shows in Raleigh, NC, left Arena Tour 6 with some interesting developments. The neck-and-neck battle between Carolina Crusher® (Gary Porter) and Megalodon (Alex Blackwell) saw North Carolina’s Porter out front for now. Next Stop: Rochester, NY

Big Kahuna (Shane England) went straight up for the Wheelie win. Next stop: Minneapolis, MN
